Audience Research and Analysis of Data

For this question the main people that has answered this question has an age range of 20 and under and this is my target audience for my music magazine.

For this question my target audience was aimed at woman but I did say that it can appeal to some men and so it's nice to see that there is an even split of responses.

For this answer people have said that they would listen to Rock and roll (72.7%)and that is the most popular music genre and this shows that there is a not a lot of popularity in R&B at the moment so I will hae to make my magazine quite appealing.

83.3% of people said that they would listen to the same genre as they would read about that genre which helps me when choosing on which genre style of music to chose.

These responses will help me decide on what to put on my front cover, contents page and double page spread so that can entice these people to read my magazine. For example for the contents page I would like to have a news page for example showing tour dates or interviews.

All of the people that did my survey said that they would read a magazine at least once or more a month so this will help me to decide how often I should release a magazine whether that be once a month or more.

8.3% of the people who completed my survey said they would not be more willing to buy a magazine if there was a gift inside so this has made me wonder whether they wouldn't want to buy a magazine that has a gift inside and if I was to ever put a free gift inside I would have to be careful of what I put inside so that it would appeal to my audience and I would also have to consider how I promote a gift in the magazine.
These responses are mixed and so will have to chose carefully so that it will appeal to my target audience however I will have to remember that my magazine is a R&B music magazine not a rock one.
From this response it is obvious that Internet is quite popular with people for finding out new releases and so for my magazine I would either try and make the new releases more enticing for the reader or not put new releases in the magazine because from these responses it shows that not many people (8.3%) find new releases from a magazine.
From these results it shows that people are willing to pay between £1-£5 on the magazine and this means that I will have to make the magazine look good enough for the people to spend this amount of money on a magazine.

Front cover, contents and DPS flat plans with written rationale

The colours that I am going to use on the front cover I will use throughout my magazine and the reason for this is because I would like to have the colour scheme consistent throughout my magazine. The colours that I am going to use are: red, white and black and the reason why I am going to pick these three colours is because this is the conventional amount and in my opinion any more would look too over powering. The connotations the colour scheme will create will possibly be a popular magazine as many other popular magazine use this colour scheme. The colours will contrast on the masthead, main image and the text used on the front page.

I will be using one image on the front page as I feel that any more would not look as professional. The type of mise en scene that I will use on the front cover will be someone sitting down on a chair, there will be watermark effect on the screen to make it look as though it is raining, red lipstick, studio setting and long shot distance. The image connotation from this would be a strong woman coming through the worst of it and it looks to be that she is still not through the worst of it (represented by the rain).

The text will have an informal style as it will be an interview with a celebrity so you wouldn’t want to have it too informal or too formal either as you want them to be relaxed as well as your audience.

The type of text font that I am planning to use for my magazine will be quite plain and simple and this will be for my reader to understand easily. The font will frame the image and I will try and not have any of the text overlapping the image as I would like the readers to be able to clearly see the images and text. For my magazine I would like to have an equal amount of text and images as I would not like to put people off who like looking at the images by putting lots of text and vice versa. However I am not going to be using a lot of images as I feel this brings down the professional finish of a magazine however I am going to arrange the text so it looks equal. For my text I am planning on using a drop-cap for the beginning of my article so that it will not only show the reader where the article starts on the page but also to entice the reader into reading the article.

I am going to use the same colour on the contents page as I used on the front page and the reason for this is because I would like to use the same colour scheme throughout my magazine and the colours I am planning on using is: red, white and black.

I am going to use three images on my contents page and the reason for this is that when researching on different music magazines on my genre I noticed that magazine that used more than three images on their contents page made the magazine look unprofessional and some magazines only had one image on the contents page and this also made the magazine look unprofessional and it also made the person who made the magazine look as though they didn’t really care about it and that they never put any effect in. For the images on the contents page I am going to use 3 images, the main image I am going to have a person standing in a minimalist setting so that the background doesn’t distract from the person in the image and this will be a long shot.

The style of text I am going to use for the contents page is going to be informal and quite minimal as I want the text to be short and sweet so that it will grab the reader’s attention in a short space of time and this would not be possible if the text I place on the contents page is an essay long. I am planning on using teasers to make the reader want to read the articles in the magazine.

For the font I am planning on using plain and simple and I am going to use the layout of the contents page to show the different articles instead of using different text as I would like that to be something that will entice the reader on the double page spread.

As I said before I am going to use the same colours throughout my magazine as this will make the magazine look more professional and it will show that I took time and consideration to choose my colour scheme – red, white and black. The reason why I have chosen these colours is because this colour scheme is quite popular with this genre and so I am going to keep into the conventions.

I am going to use a similar image for the image on the double page spread as I used for the front cover and the reason why I have done this is so that the readers can distinguish that the image on the front of the magazine is for the article on the double page spread. For this image I will try and create the same connotations, setting and I am not going to use the same body position and texture as I think that this will make the magazine look unprofessional and I think it will make the magazine look rushed and that I haven’t took much time on the images and that I have just copied the image from the front page to the double page spread. For the images I am going to use, relevant images so that the images will relate to the text of the article. In the article I will be describing how much hard ship this person has been through. I will also try to teasers for possible new releases/boyfriend/collaborations/imagery/sell-lines/masthead, which will hopefully engage the reader to read the full article.

For the text I am going to use drop-caps to show the reader where the article starts and it will hopefully entice people into reading the article as this convention will help entice the reader. I am going to tease the reader by using quotes (in bigger text than the articles text) in between the article paragraph so that the audience will read them quotes and then, will hopefully want to know why the person in the article has said this, and make them want to read an article. For the text I am planning on using plain and simple however I will be using different styles of simple text to show the reader the different conventions for example the pull-quotes and the actual article. For the text on the double page spread I would like some of the format to be different to keep the reader engaged however I am not going to change it dramatically as I would like to keep the main style of the magazine to be the same throughout. I will frame the text around the images.

Proposal Table with Potential Problems

This is a proposal table and this is where I am going to describe what I am going to do and the potential problems that could arise while making my magazine and I have done this table so that if any thing goes wrong I will have the knowledge from this table of what I could do to solve it.

Potential Problems with My Coursework

Potential area where there might be a problem
How I will deal with this problem
Images for:
  • Front cover
  • Contents Page

The potential problems that could arise with the images could be:
  • My model that I had in mind for the images for my magazine might not want to do the images any more and so I would deal with the problem by asking them again to take the image or even try asking someone else that is more reliable.
  • My model might not turn up and I may not have another chance to catch up and take pictures at another stage and I would try and deal with this problem by either using images from the internet, quickly take some images and hope they look good enough, use some images you have taken previously or ask your teacher for some advice on how to solve this as a last resort.
  • The images that I take might not be of the quality that I need to meet requirement
-       Blurry
-       Not the appropriate shot size
To solve this problem I would retake these images again and when taking the image make sure that the images are in focus and look good on the screen.
  • The images might not big enough to fit the size of my bigger enough (may have to stretch them and then ruin the quality of my magazine) and to solve this problem I would a different MP size camera next time I need to take photographs.
  • I might not have taken enough images to use and chose from and to deal with problem I would either try and take some more before the exam or use the best of my images that I have already taken.

Article Inside Magazine

The potential problems that could arise with the article inside my magazine:
  • The article that I had in mind might not fit with my genre style and I could solve this problem by re-writing the article again or just change the articles genre style by changing what made it the wrong genre style in the first place. For example if the person in the magazine sounded from another genre I would change the person to someone in my magazine genre.
  • The article might be to long and so to make this better I would take out parts of my article that is irrelevant or I would re-arrange it so that the article was shorter.
  • The article might be too short and to solve this problem I would look at other magazine of my genre and see what more I could add in.
  • The article might not sound realistic and so to solve this problem I would look through other magazines and see what type of article they write and see how I need to improve my own.
  • There may be spelling errors and to solve this problem I could use spell checker to get rid of all the spelling errors.
  • The layout may not look very good and so to improve this I could look at how other magazines arrange their articles and change mine to make mine look better.
Images to accompany article

The potential problems that could arise with the images to accompany my article:
  • The images to accompany my article may be too big and detract from the text and to solve this problem I would just resize my images to a more appropriate size.
  • The images for my magazine may be too small and they may be pointless having and so to solve this problem I would make the images I will be using in my magazine bigger.
  • There could be too many images in the article and to solve this I would not use as many and take a few out and re-arrange the ones that I have chosen.
  • The images for the article may not have good enough image quality to be re-sized and so to solve this I would re-take the images on a better camera.
  • The images I have taken may not be very good and might not relate to by article and to solve this problem I could re-write my article to match my images or re-take my images to match my article.
  • The colour of the image may clash with the colour scheme I have chosen and to solve this problem I would either change my colour scheme to match my image, take another image with the model/background wearing a different colour or go onto Photoshop an use the different tools on there to change the colours.
  • The lighting of the image may not be very good and to solve this I could use Photoshop Tools to lighten this or re-take the image.
